Adult Protective Services: The What, Why, and How
In this virtual discussion presented in partnership with the Elder Justice Coalition, we examine baseline funding for Adult Protective Services, and how service providers can advocate for our communities. Jennfer Spoeri, Executive Director for the National Adult Protective Services Association, covers the importance of APS funding and the services it provides, and addresses misconceptions about APS. Heidi Turner-Stone, Section Chief of the Ohio APS, highlights the significance of state-level APS funding, while Bob Blancato of the Elder Justice Coalition covers this significance on a federal level.

Collaborative Approaches in Elder Justice for Protecting Adults Living with Dementia and IDD
Join us for a thought-provoking webinar featuring esteemed experts in the field on elder justice, specifically highlighting work to protect those with dementia or IDD. Dr. Ronan Factora of the Cleveland Clinic and Natasha Pietrocola of the Cuyahoga County Division of Senior and Adult Services describe an innovative collaboration to provide virtual capacity assessments to Adult Protective Service (APS) clients who need them. Dr. Jess Bibbo from Benjamin Rose Institute on Aging presents emerging evidence about the impact of pets in the lives of people affected by dementia, as well as the benefits and challenges of client pet ownership encountered by APS professionals. Courtney Reynolds from Benjamin Rose shares information about a training program designed to educate mandatory reporters on abuse, neglect and exploitation. Keeping Your Older Loved One Safe from Grandparent Scams
It’s an old stereotype that grandparents will do almost anything for their grandchildren—including opening their wallets more often than they probably should. If they hear their grandchild is experiencing a crisis, their first response is likely to do whatever they can to help them. Unfortunately, fraudsters are taking advantage of this natural impulse to help with a type of scheme known as a “grandparent scam.”

Elder Justice Innovations: Helping Individuals Transition from APS to other Community-Based Supports
Benjamin Rose Institute on Aging is committed to highlighting the important Elder Justice work being implemented across the country. Presented in partnership with the Elder Justice Coalition, attendees heard from the Administration for Community Living about the 2021 Elder Justice Innovation Grants. A select group of grantees discussed their work focused on the various community services that help individuals transition from short-term adult protective service programs to community services in their area to prevent the recurrence of abuse.

Breaking Down the Seven Types of Elder Abuse
Caregivers play an important role in protecting not just a loved one’s health, but their overall safety and wellness as well. According to the National Council on Aging, one in 10 Americans age 60 and older are the victims of elder abuse, but only around one in every 24 cases of abuse is reported. In cases when a loved one is unable or even unwilling to report, caregivers may be the person in the best position to get help. However, it can be hard to identify the problem if we are unfamiliar with the types of actions that qualify as abuse.
